The Test Engineer will help launch and oversee the operations of a new engine testing laboratory supporting outboard marine engine product development, performance validation, calibration, emissions certification, and continuous improvement. This is a unique ground-floor opportunity to help commission a newly developed dynamometer and emissions testing operation, establish standardized laboratory processes, and harmonize testing procedures with the company’s product development headquarters. The selected engineer will work with advanced dynamometer, emissions measurement, automation, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems while guiding technical staff and taking ownership of laboratory testing activities. The position is well suited for a hands-on engineer who enjoys engine testing, troubleshooting, calibration, data analysis, process improvement, and working within a growing technical organization. Candidates with relevant automotive, powersports, industrial engine, heavy-duty engine, or marine testing experience will be considered.

Our client is a globally recognized manufacturer of marine propulsion products known for engineering innovation, reliability, performance, and advanced outboard technology. The company maintains a strong international product development organization and is expanding its United States testing and engineering capabilities through a growing Marine Technical Center in Florida. This dedicated facility supports outboard engine development, performance validation, emissions certification, and global testing initiatives in collaboration with engineering teams globally.
The Opportunity:
The Test Engineer will help launch and oversee the operations of a new engine testing laboratory supporting outboard marine engine product development, performance validation, calibration, emissions certification, and continuous improvement. This is a unique ground-floor opportunity to help commission a newly developed dynamometer and emissions testing operation, establish standardized laboratory processes, and harmonize testing procedures with the company’s product development headquarters. The selected engineer will work with advanced dynamometer, emissions measurement, automation, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems while guiding technical staff and taking ownership of laboratory testing activities. Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support and oversee the daily operation of the engine testing laboratory.
- Conduct and support in-house performance and emissions testing of outboard marine internal combustion engines.
- Perform testing in support of product development, product verification, platform certification, engine calibration, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Manage and direct the daily activities of internal technical staff.
- Provide technical leadership, coaching, and hands-on support to laboratory technicians.
- Lead the maintenance and operation of dynamometers, cooling towers, process water systems, engine cooling systems, ventilation systems, fuel delivery systems, automation systems, data acquisition systems, and instrumentation.
- Participate in the commissioning, installation, validation, and startup of newly installed AVL engine testing and emissions equipment.
- Standardize test reporting, including emissions reports, torque and horsepower curves, fuel consumption maps, heat rejection curves, and related engineering data.
- Harmonize laboratory procedures, test methods, data, and workflows with company engineering standards and the product development organization.
- Partner with the Department Manager and support product development engineers with product modifications for the domestic outboard marine market.
Qualifications:
- Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering with at least three years of relevant professional experience; or
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering with at least five years of relevant professional experience; or
- Bachelor’s degree in Applied Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or Electrical Engineering Technology with at least seven years of relevant professional experience.
- Minimum of three years of relevant experience in engine testing or calibration development involving automotive, powersports, industrial, marine, or heavy-duty engines or vehicles; five or more years is preferred.
- Hands-on experience with engine dynamometers, engine testing systems, and emissions analysis equipment is required.
- Experience with automotive, powersports, motorcycle, industrial engine, heavy-duty, or marine applications will be considered.
- Knowledge of EPA emissions testing and certification requirements is strongly preferred; direct marine emissions experience is beneficial but not required.
- Familiarity with standards defined in EPA 40 CFR Part 1065 and marine engine testing requirements under EPA 40 CFR Part 1045 is preferred.
- Hands-on experience with flow meters, pressure sensors, thermocouples, resistance temperature detectors, and related instrumentation is required.
- Experience with electronic control systems and direct-current electrical systems is required.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
- Working knowledge of Controller Area Network protocols is required.
- Experience using electrical diagnostic tools, including multimeters and oscilloscopes.
- Familiarity with AVL testing tools, AVL PUMA automation systems, and related software is highly preferred.
- Experience with data acquisition and analysis tools such as DEWESoft, LabVIEW, MATLAB, Uniplot, or similar platforms is preferred.
- Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills.
- High level of accuracy, documentation discipline, and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities within a fast-paced and evolving technical environment.
- Motivated, self-sufficient, technically versatile, adaptable, and willing to take ownership of laboratory operations.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to collaborate with technical and nontechnical professionals at all organizational levels.
- Ability and willingness to travel abroad for approximately one to two months of initial technical training.
